Own Your Health
Whether you are currently living the dream overseas or are still seeking that first assignment, good health is your single most important resource. It costs an employer thousands of dollars and many hours of effort to get you set up to do your job OCONUS. They need to know you will be at your desk, job site, etc., every day you are scheduled to work. You need to know you will be there to keep your good reputation and continue to get good assignments. Beyond that, good health is truly more valuable than any amount of money, and most of us take it for granted until we get sick – and by then it may be too late.
Most companies or other entities you will work for OCONUS provide international medical insurance, but there is no way anyone but you can insure your best chances of staying healthy. Besides, if you do get sick OCONUS, the local hospitals and/or doctors may not be up to the standards you are accustomed to so even if you have good insurance, you should not presume there will be good health services to go along with it.
You are responsible for your healthcare (whether you are OCONUS or not, or want to work OCONUS or not) even if you have the best medical insurance available. Insurance does not keep you healthy. You and your knowledge, and implementation of that knowledge, are what keeps you healthy.
Own your health.
